Rosamund Community Garden Update October 2023

a garden for the community in Guildford, Longdown Road, GU4 8PP

🌱Annual Open Day with Apple Pressing, this Sunday 8th October from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm

A wonderful day for everyone to get together and have fun. There will be activities for the kids (as well as the pressing, which is always popular) food and drinks to share, and the opportunity to see all the exciting projects in the garden.

Bring any apples you have spare and containers to take your juice home in.

The day is also our biggest fundraiser so bring your cash to contribute to keep the garden going.

📝GARDEN NEWS FROM CLARE

Autumn is here, and as often happens, we’re getting a last lovely warm spell. The change of light and the cooler nights are bringing beautiful morning mists and heavy dews.

Meanwhile, the courgettes are having a last push to produce fruit in the polytunnels and out in the trugs before the frost comes.

The salads we planted and sowed are doing well in the beds and we can continue to sow in the polytunnel to provide greens early next spring.

The apples have been marvelous this year and we’ve enjoyed tasting all the lovely varieties.

Our autumn raspberries are really tasty, and ready for the children to gorge on at the open day.

Our “Christmas Wreath Making Workshop on Sunday, December 3rd is almost sold out, so if you fancy joining in this event book asap » INFO (2 spaces remaining).

Next week, Wednesday 11th October from 10-2pm, we have the mighty Galliford Try back for a community volunteer day working on the Hub. This is open to everyone who wants to try building with wattle and daub and cob, so just turn up and wear your worst clothes!

Last month, we had a day with Fedcap Employment, who came and learned to daub with cob on the Hub. They had a fantastic day and have really moved the build on with all their hard work. Hopefully, we can repeat our collaboration next year too.

If you work for a company that is looking for volunteer days in the community, please get in touch and we can facilitate a great day at the garden on one of our many projects.

We’ve been approached by Ringway depot in Merrow to help them with their greening project, and they’ll be using our poly-tunnel to raise seedlings for it. Hopefully, this will be one of many community initiatives we can collaborate with.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - MEET CHARLOTTE🌟

Charlotte discovered the garden during lockdown when she spent the days out walking the Surrey Hills. Not much of a gardener, but she looks after the orchard, pruning it in winter, mulching it in spring, watering it in dry times, and eating its produce as often as she can. She loves the wildlife and spends time in the garden and meadow looking for different species and watching the birds "Coming to the garden is like a balm for the soul" she says.❤️

📰COMMUNITY PROJECT NEWS

🐝October Bee Update by Peter Smith

Peter is also giving a talk on the Asian Hornet at the Hilltop Centre at RHS Wisley on October 13 at 11.30 and 14.00. He’ll be talking about the unprecedented threat this insect poses not just to bees but to all our native pollinators and what we can do to help counter this. There will also be an opportunity to see and handle the hornets (dead ones!). Do please tell anyone else who might be interested.

🕐OCTOBER JOBS AT THE GARDEN

  • Harvesting the tomatoes and removing spent plants
